Introduction
For several months, the Kunena team has been focused on developing the new version—Kunena 1.6—which we're happy to release in alpha version today. This version bridges the previous Kunena 1.5 (which contains a lot of legacy code from Fireboard) and Kunena 2.0 (rewritten and based on the Joomla 1.5/1.6 MVC structure). Kunena 1.6 has many new features requested by the users. Most of the features developed in Kunena 1.6 will easily work in Kunena 2.0.
What is new?
In the Kunena 1.6 alpha release, you will find many new features, including:
• Revamped administrator backend
• New, centralized template system
• Polls are now integrated
• New backend Trash Manager to collect all deleted topics or messages
• A new way to add attachments to posts (AJAX-based and no need to edit the message multiple times)
• New moderation tools (with functions move, merge, split, delete) with less buttons
• User IPs can be easily blocked or banned (directly in their profile or in the backend Kunena User Manager)
• New installer system with step by step details of the installation process (and Joomla 1.6 compatible)
• Anonymous Tipping allows users to post topics in a defined category completely anonymously (no IP, no tracking)
• Users can delete their own messages within a defined period of time
• Improved RSS features
• New BBcode editor, including post preview
• Color coded categories
• Category subscriptions
• Converted from jQuery to MooTools 1.2 for better compatibility
These are just a few of the many new features and changes in Kunena 1.6. A lot of outdated code has been either removed or rewritten as well.
Kunena 1.6 also works with Joomla 1.6. The new ACL system hasn't been leveraged yet, but the Kunena Team is committed to making Kunena run on Joomla 1.6 once it becomes final.
MooTools 1.2 Plug-in Required
Kunena 1.6 no longer uses jQuery and requires MooTools 1.2+. Joomla 1.6 includes this version, but until Joomla 1.5 doesn't includes it, the Kunena 1.6 installer will automatically install this plug-in.
You can download the MooTools 1.2 plug-in separately for testing. Click here to download it:
This plug-in has a few minor issues on the Joomla backend, but is a stable way to run MooTools 1.1 and 1.2 simultaneously.

Compatibility with Third-party Kunena Templates
Templates designed for Kunena 1.5.x will NOT work on Kunena 1.6 due to major changes in the code and structure. All the logic has been removed from the template to make it much easier for template designers to create Kunena 1.6 templates.
Compatibility with Third-party Kunena Modules
Kunena 1.6 is NOT compatible with modules or plug-ins designed for previous versions. Kunena 1.6 now provides an updated API for easily creating modules or plug-ins. The Kunena team has made some new plug-ins and modules which leverage the new API and can be used with Kunena 1.6.
Installing or Upgrading Kunena
Be sure your setup matches the minimum Technical Requirements or the install/upgrade process will fail. If it fails, your data will be left untouched.
To install Kunena, make sure you read our Installation Instructions before beginning. To upgrade Kunena from previous versions (including FireBoard), make sure you read the Upgrade Instructions.
The Kunena installer has evolved, been tested, and handles both installs as well as upgrades of existing installs without the need for user intervention or manual SQL execution. It keeps a detailed version log of all versions that have ever been installed on your site in order to be able to perform incremental upgrades as necessary.
We would like to underscore the importance of backups before and after any upgrade process. Never perform an install or upgrade without a full backup.
